Description

Constant exposure to high stress situations, particularly in a professional context, can lead to a phenomenon known as burnout.  Additionally, profession that require providing services for people who are wounded, sick, or particularly vulnerable can lead to a distinct form of burnout known as compassion fatigue. If those aren’t enough, professionals who are exposed to traumatic experiences of clients or patients and are charged with helping them process these can experience vicarious trauma themselves.

Counseling professionals tend to be gifted at taking care of others and guiding others to be able to take better care of themselves.  However, those same professionals can struggle with applying principles of care to themselves and many underestimate the burdens they are under and how they are being impacted.
