This presentation offers a unique perspective on complex trauma in adolescents and families from the perspective of heartbreak. When a young child’s needs/emotions are chronically unmet due to abuse, neglect, and/or misattunement, children foreclose on those very needs/emotions (their heart) in favor of adapting to what’s available to them rather than what they need. Attendees will learn what how to conceptualize complex trauma symptoms and behaviors through the lens of attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and developmental affective neuroscience. Attendees will also learn how to apply clinical skills specifically oriented to addressing adaptive patterns stemming from this early heartbreak.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the term complex trauma and the ICD-11 C-PTSD Diagnosis
  • Describe at least two examples of early attachment, relational, and developmental trauma
  • Identify at least two complex trauma themes that underly problematic adolescent symptoms and behaviors
  • Apply at least two practical skills for addressing complex trauma with adolescents
